Neil Matheson is a photographer, writer and bookmaker based in London. Following a BA in Economics at the University of Nottingham he took a degree in Photography at PCL and then an MA Photography at the University of Derby. He also holds a PhD in Theory and History of Art from the University of Kent, specialising in surrealism and masculinity.
He taught photography and art theory at the University of Westminster until 2023 and has taught previously at LCC, the V&A and Sotheby's. Publications include 'Surrealism and the Gothic', 'The Machine and the Ghost', 'The Sources of Surrealism' and numerous essays and papers.
Photographic projects include urban development, consumerism, the Covid-19 lockdowns, modernism and the Kent coast, and visual diaries.
Photobooks are the main output from most projects and are all hand-bound in very limited runs. Recent work also includes watercolours and drawings.
